Power Snowmobiling

Taken from Men's Fitness magazine - Power Sledding By Eric Putter

Can you imagine the mental stamina and physical endurance required to ride a 500 lb sled for ten hours at a time?

A guy did just that, journeying with more experienced friends, Eric Putter, navigated the web of high-speed frozen freeways and slivers of wooded trails that comprise Quebec's extensive snowmobile trail system. Despite the fatigue, it was the kind of freewheeling adventure of which tall tales are made - and shared. Warmed by the camaraderie and energized by the physical challenge, Eric ignored saddle sores and soldiered on for 1,500 miles. The sheer beauty of running wild across frozen tundra in a frenzy of snow dust and testosterone anesthetized his pain, and found a new appreciation for sport he first tried in childhood.

He has now logged about 10,000 miles on snowmobiles and looks forward to making this wintertime blast an annual rite. Anyone can do so with some planning and mental stamina and physical endurance. An array of vehicular adventures awaits you at ski town, at resorts and on organized tours around the globe.

Speaking To India

How did it happen? When you call your bank or insurance company, book a flight over the phone or talk to your mobile service provider, you may well be speaking to someone in India.

It's common today for major companies to outsource some of their business requirements to offshore providers. the call centre of India particularly those in Bangalore, are among those most used by a wide variety of large Western companies.

Workers are generally organised into tiers based on skills and authority, with those who initially answer the phone call generally trained to answer queries according to a set method.
India has been a popular call centre location for several reasons. The time difference between India and much of the western world, particularly the 12-hour gap with North America, has allowed companies to do business 24 hours a day, seven days a week and to ensure overnight deliveries.

Big companies also choose India because its workforce is proficient and highly educated yet relatively cheap to employ. Also the large number of English speakers in India long before Captain Cook ever set his eyes on Australia.

However, thee have also been many criticisms of Indian call centres, particularly towards the working environment. Some people argue that the pay and conditions for call centre operators are restrictive and substandard. It has also been suggested that many call centre workers suffer excessive stress and burnout because they work erratic hours and are forced to adopt western names and accents their callers can relate to.

Science Produced Something for Nothing.

Mentioned in the Daily Telegraph - How science produced something for nothing.

Perhaps India's greatest contribution to scientific knowledge was something we take for granted: the Hindu concept of "zero" which was taken by Arab traders to Europe and forms the fundamental basis of our present decimal system.

Since the ancient Hindus had a concept of nothingness or 'void', they were able to conceive of numerical abstractions - unlike the Romans, whose numbering system always started with 1. Hindu mathematics is also responsible for negative numbers and the algorithms that are now a standard part of computer programming.

The ancient text, the Shulvasutras, lays down some of the fundamental principles of mathematics in the fifth century, as geometry and algebra were used extensively to provide measurements for the building of monuments and temple but also to aid in the broader science of astronomy. The study of the planets and stars was closely linked to spiritual worship so that astrology and astronomy were closely linked in the Hindu imagination.

Astronomy was also an advanced scientific pursuit in the late Mughal Empire. Since the Mughal emperors were considered to be divine, the study of the planets received heavy royal patronage and evidence of this can be seen through the elaborate astronomical observatories at Delhi and Jaipur.

Linking East and West

This much needed alternative medicine article is from Men's Fitness Dec 1999.

Acupuncture is based on the concept that the body has an energy force known as qi (pronounced chee) that flows through 14 pathways, called meridians, which run up and down the surface of the body. When any of the meridians become blocked or unbalanced, an illness may occur; illness or injury may also cause an interruption. Specific points along the meridians are "needled" to improve and clear blockages.

A study commissioned by the NIH found that electrical signals do indeed move along the meridian lines where they intersect with a number of acupuncture points researchers speculate that the points may act as amplifiers, and that inserting a needle interrupts the electrical flow that stimulates pain. Also, the trauma of the insertion may activate the natural healing response, inducing the release of chemical nutrients and pain-killing endorphins.

In acupuncture, the process of examination begins immediately. Practitioners look at body language, voice, emotions, speech, self-presentation, breathing and touch sensitivity in an effort to determine lifestyle patterns that reflect a person's health. 'In Oriental medicine, we believe the body and the mind are interconnected,' says Los Angeles licensed acupuncturist Carl Rothenberg. "stress, depression, anger, inability to focus and act on decisions - all of these things are treatable with acupuncture.'

This is a remarkable alternative medicine for the West as stress and mental illness abound and is growing at a very fast rate and it is happening at a younger age.

Too Close For Comfort

An article from 'Creation" magazine Vol. 29 No. 1 Dec 2006 - Feb 2007
By Sean wieland

The old saying, 'two heads are better than one,' doesn't apply in the case of 'We', the two-headed snake. Having two heads on the same body causes major problems in everything from eating to mating. In fact, 'most two-headed snakes don't live more than a few months.' 'We has survived because, unlike some two-headed animals, both mouths are connected to the same stomach.

So, why does We have two heads? It was originally supposed to be twins, but something went terribly wrong. 'Two-headed snakes typically occur in the same way that Siamese twins do. A developing embryo begins to split into identical twins but then stops part way, leaving the twins joined.'

Do We's two heads have any evolutionary significance? Not in the slightest. Even the pro-evolution National Geographic, in a story about another two-headed snake, calls two-headedness, 'anomaly, not evolution.' CMI's Dr Don Batten agrees that such errors 'most likely came about because of a defect during development, rather than inheriting a defective gene from a parent.' As he points out, animals and even humans, can be born with extra toe, fingers, ears and the like. However, whether this is the result of a developmental defect, or is due to a defective gene ( a mutation), 'no new genetic information is involved in making these extras.' No new genetic information means these cases offer no support at all to the idea of evolution.

Bifidobacteria and Their Therapeutic Effects.

Taken from Pharmacist Vol. 22 No. 11 November 2003

‘Almost all patients who present to a health practitioner will need some gastrointestinal support, whatever their condition.’

Bifidobacteria dominate the flora of the large intestine. They lower the pH of faeces and inhibit pathogenic strains of Escherica coli and infections produced by Clostridium difficile and Clostridium perfringens.
The genus Bifidobacterium includes 29 closely related species. Mitsuoka has found that the species of bifidobacteria which are most prevalent in the colon of newborn infants are Bifidobacterium breve, B. parvulorum, B. bifidum, B. longum and B. adolescentis.6
Bifidobacteria are sensitive to wide spectrum antibiotics and to those which are potent against gram-positive bacteria.

However, they often limit their side effects, such as nausea and diarrhoea. In a wellcontrolled
experiment, Colombel and associates (1987), treated 10 volunteers with erythromycin administered orally and yoghurt containing B. longum. The stool weight and number, the presence of abdominal discomfort and the number of clostridium spores were noted. The
simultaneous intake of yoghurt containing B. longum with erythromycin reduced the frequency of gastrointestinal disorders and reduced the clostridial spore count.

The placebo yoghurt had no effect. Consequently, B. longum can re-establish the normal flora.7
Almost all patients who present to a health practitioner will need some gastrointestinal support, whatever their condition. Probiotics are an essential part of daily nutritional needs. Consuming foods that contain live acidophilus cultures such as yoghurt are certainly beneficial, but it is
unlikely the species in these are numerous enough or resilient enough to survive in the gastrointestinal system. Given that there are so many contributing factors to gut dysbiosis, regular intake of a high quality probiotic supplement with a proven track record is recommended. The recognition and detection of the underlying factors that contribute to ill
health and gut dysbiosis assists in the management of patients who require specific probiotics as a vital therapeutic tool in the maintenance of health and wellbeing, and the prevention of future illness and disability.

Workout For Energy

Bigger biceps in just 15 minutes. Sounds great, all with the promise of feeling great, full of energy.

Maybe it's the genetic legacy left to us by our hunter-gatherer ancestors. Maybe it's the misguided notion that more is always better. Whatever the reason, guys, like to go overboard accumulating the equipment needed to get the job done, from sporting goods to hand tools. This over-the-top approach also often applies to the way we work our biceps.

Building better biceps isn't about hammering them mercilessly with movement after movement - it's about working them more effectively by understanding what they are and what they do.

The biceps actually includes two different muscle groups: the brachialis and the biceps. The brachialis is the thin band of muscle that appears between the biceps and triceps on the outer part of the upper arm, and while it may not contribute much to overall size, a well-developed brachialis does contribute greatly to appearance of fullness in the upper arm. The bicep is by far the larger muscle in the front of the upper arm and the one most responsible for bending the arm and bringing things toward us. The biceps is a fairly simple muscle. An effective biceps exercise regimen should reflect this simplicity, focusing on supination and bringing the arm upward as well as developing the brachialis.

Whether you are a novice or a seasoned weight-room veteran plenty of exercise regimen should result in bigger arms in a few weeks. This choice exercise will also bring on energy.
