Learning and Behaviour Problems in Children

In 1995 a national newspaper published a short story on the fact that the American Health
Foundation had conducted a nutrition study in 3,112 children. It was found that despite the fact
that a child needs five or more servings of fruits and vegetables each day, the average American
child gets two, and half of those are fried potatoes. The article went on to say that due to this
deficiency, the children of America pay a lifelong price in compromised health.
A dietary supplement marketing company located in the state of Texas, Mannatech Inc., took this pronouncement to heart. It developed a colorful bear-shaped, gelatin, bite-sized product that contains 12 fruits and vegetables mixed as dehydrated powders with sugars known to be required for cellular synthesis. This was designed with the general idea to improve nutrition, and to make it simple for children to have the necessary nutrients needed for good health, development, and performance, from foods which they would not otherwise readily choose to eat. W ithin weeks of this product being introduced to the marketplace, reports began to be received from all over North America from families with children on psychotropic drugs and in special education classes for Attention Deficit Disorder/Hyperactive Syndrome (ADD/ADHD). They reported that within two to four weeks of adding the fruit and vegetable bears to their children’s diet, they were out of special education classes, no longer needed prescription drugs, and were greatly improved in regard to their academic performance and deportment at home and in school. It was a surprise to hear of the academic and behavior improvements. Such stories continued until a case series of 19 ADD children was published (K Dykman 1997). This led to a small prospective pilot study in 17 ADD/ADHD children that was conducted using professional evaluation criteria applied at periodic intervals while subjects consumed micronutrients. Scorings supported the growing number of parent reports of significant benefits for behavior in young individuals given this diagnosis (K Dykman 1998).

Scientists have pinpointed a unlikely potential weapon in the war against obesity - seaweed.
They found rats given fucoxanthin - a pigment in brown kelp - lost up to 10% of their body weight, mainly from around the gut.
They hope fucoxanthin can be developed into a slimming supplement or a drug that targets harmful fat.
The Hokkaido University research was presented to an American Chemical Society meeting in San Francisco.
Brown kelp, Undaria pinnatifida, is a key ingredient of Japanese miso soup.
But the researchers said drinking large quanatities of the soup in an effort to lose weight would have little effect.
Fucoxanthin is tightly bound to proteins in the seaweed and not easily absorbed in its natural form.
Double Effect - The researcher, led by Dr Kazuo Miyashita, said it might take another three to five years before a slimming pill based on fucoxanthin was available to the public.

Free Radicals and Stroke
Stoke is an example of how free radicals do their dirty work, and how they can make a bad situation even worse. A stroke occurs when blood flow is cut off or restricted to a particular region of the brain. It could be caused by a blood clot, or by a piece of debris that breaks off from an atherosclerotic plaque and blocks the artery delivering blood and oxygen to the brain. Whatever the cause, the results can be devastating. You may be surprised to know that much of the actual damage to the brain does not occur when it is being deprived of blood and oxygen, but immediately following the stroke, when the blood flow is restored. This is called reperfusion injury. When it happens, there is a burst in production of superoxide free radicals that can attack nearby tissue, resulting in permanent brain damage.
The situation can get even more serious if in the process of damaging brain tissue, iron is released into sites where it is normally tightly bound or controlled. Iron is the most abundant mineral in the body and it is vital for life, but iron is not allowed to roam freely throughout the body. Free iron, not bound to protein, is potentially very dangerous because it can trigger free radical reactions. Not surprisingly, there have also been several studies that have linked high blood levels of free iron to an increased risk of heart disease and stroke.

One area of nutrition which has come under the spotlight in recent years is glyconutrients. These are dietary nutrients composed of sugars, also known as saccharides or plant sugars. But they shouldn't be mistaken with the white stuff you spoon into your coffee each morning. These sugars come from raw, unprocessed plant foods, and are important for nutritional health. They are also regarded as a "missing link" in nutrition.
Although research into this field started to emerge in the 1960s, it wasn't until about a decade ago that the specific role of glyconutrients first became known.
In 1996, a study published in Harpers Biochemistry reported that the body needed eight specific sugars, and that only two of them were prominent in our diets.
Robert Sinnott, Chief Science Officer and Vice President of Research and Development of US-based glyconutritional science, explains.
"The sugars which we receive in abundance in our modern diets are glucose and galactose.
"Glucose is by far the most abundant of these two, since the most common sweeteners in foods - sugar and corn syrup - contain very high proportions of glucose.
"People who consume substantial quantities of milk products get rather large amounts of galactose, since lactose, also known as milk sugar, is composed of one glucose molecule and one galactose molecule bonded together."
The "missing" sugars come from a diverse array of plant and animal sources. "Particularly rich sources of these materials include fresh, uncooked fruits, vegetables and seeds, and also plant gums and certain types of algae."

reentering the cell cycle to produce thousands of descendants;
dedifferentiate as they do so; that is, they lose the characteristic proteins, etc. of muscle cells.
Starfish - These echinoderms can regenerate the entire organism from just one arm and the central disk. At one time oyster fishermen used to dredge up starfish from their oyster beds, chop them up in the hope of killing them, and then dump the parts back overboard. They soon discovered to their sorrow the remarkable powers of regeneration of these animals.
Mammals - Don't we wish that we had the same powers of regeneration that salamanders do: able to regenerate a severed spinal cord or grow a new heart!
We can regenerate some skin and a large amount of liver. But until recently, it seemed that that was the extent of it.
Stem cells have the ability to regenerate any other cell in the body. Thus a stem cell can become a neuron, a liver cell, a brain cell, a fingernail cell, etc.
